A High Court judge has rejected a bail application by former lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung who is charged with conspiracy to commit subversion under the national security law.

Leung and 35 other activists and politicians who were involved in primary polls the pro-democracy camp held last summer have been remanded in custody since the beginning of March.

Eleven other defendants involved in the case were earlier released on bail.

Appearing before Justice Esther Toh on Monday, Leung chanted slogans like “shame on the political prosecution” before the hearing started.

Leung's supporters, meanwhile, shouted "hang in there!" after his bail application was rejected.

The bail applications of Jimmy Sham, a former convener of the Civil Human Rights Front, and former lawmaker Claudia Mo, were pushed back to April 12 and 14 respectively, as their lawyer said more time was needed to handle new evidence submitted by the prosecution.

The subversion case will next be heard in court on May 31.
