Domestic tourism in the mainland almost returned to pre-pandemic levels, new data showed on Tuesday, though authorities say it will take some time yet before spending levels go back to normal.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said 102 million mainland travellers visited domestic tourist sites across the country during the Qingming Festival – representing 94.5 percent of pre-Covid-19 levels.

Compared to 2020, the figure was up 144.6 percent.

But the 27.2 billion yuan in tourism revenue generated only reached 57 percent of the pre-pandemic level, authorities said.

Xinhua News Agency cited the ministry as saying that while tourism is recovering, it will take more time for travel spending to get fully back on track, because most people are making shorter trips, while the trade has slashed prices and many venues are letting people in for free.
