Hong Kong badminton players Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics' mixed doubles event, after they defeated their German opponents two games to one in their final group stage match.

The badminton pair recorded one win and one loss before the critical match on Monday, in which they needed to beat Isabel Herttrich and Mark Lamsfuss from Germany in order to advance to the next round.

After two tight games, the Hong Kong pair were finally able to forge a lead and hang on, winning 21-16 in the third and decisive game.

In fencing, Ryan Choi and Hong Kong's flag-bearer at the opening ceremony, Cheung Ka-long, both reached the final 16 of the men's individual foil event.

But teammate Cheung Siu-lun was knocked out of the same event in the first round by German Andre Sanita.

Meanwhile, triathlete Oscar Coggins finished 33rd in the men's individual triathlon – the best ever placing by a Hong Kong athlete in the event.

In a race that got off to a rare false start, the 21-year-old clocked one hour 48 minutes and 55 seconds, around four minutes behind winner Kristian Blummenfelt from Norway.

Alex Yee continued Britain's impressive run in the event, taking silver, with Hayden Wilde of New Zealand grabbing the bronze.
