Teenage table tennis athlete Wong Ting-ting secured Hong Kong's first medal of the Tokyo Paralympics on Saturday morning, despite a semi-final defeat to defending champion Elena Prokofev.
The 17-year-old from the SAR won the first game of the best-of-five match 11-9 but lost the next three 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 to the 50-year-old Russian in the class 11 competition.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam and Home Affairs Secretary Caspar Tsui were quick to send their congratulations.
"Wong Ting-ting made her debut at the Paralympic Games marvellously and outperformed veteran players, winning the first medal for Hong Kong at the Games," Lam said.
"We are delighted and thrilled. Given her strong will and exceptional talent, I believe that she will reach new heights of sporting glory."
