Chief Secretary John Lee on Thursday announced the opening of a community isolation facility in Hung Shui Kiu.
There are around 550 rooms with 1,600 beds at the site -- the fifth built with help from the central government.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the facility, Lee said from next month, around 200 beds will be available for elderly people who have mild symptoms or are recovering from Covid.
Bigger rooms with up to 12 beds will be used to house such people, including elderly patients discharged from hospital.
"We hope to unleash the functions and values of the Hung Shui Kiu facility, therefore we decided to make it serve two purposes. One is a typical isolation facility and the other is a temporary holding centre," Lee said.
He also said that the occupancy rate of the other four isolation facilities is currently at around 80 percent.
