Hong Kong swimmer Chan Yui-lam on Thursday won a gold medal in the women’s 100-metre butterfly S-14 event at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.

Chan took the lead in the first 50 metres, and finished the race in one minute and 4.73 seconds, breaking the Asian Para Games record.

She was around two seconds faster than Japanese swimmer Kinoshita Aira.

The 20-year-old told RTHK after the race that she's satisfied with her performance.

"I think both my overall performance and confidence have improved since I started swimming the butterfly stroke... now it's just a matter of strengthening my mindset," she said.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Cheung Ho-ying was ranked fifth in the same event, finishing in one minute and 11.30 seconds.
