Poland’s Aleksandra Miroslaw on Wednesday climbed her way to the top to become the first-ever gold medallist in women’s speed climbing, one of the quickest events at the Paris Olympics.
Miroslaw, who is already the world record holder, had a clean run up the 15-metre wall to beat Deng Lijuan of China in the big final for gold with a time of 6.10 seconds.
Deng also had an impressive run to earn the silver medal with her personal best time of 6.18 seconds.
Miroslaw’s teammate Aleksandra Kalucka secured the bronze after beating Indonesia's Rajiah Sallsabillah in the small final with a time of 6.53.
Sport climbing was first introduced at the Tokyo Games, where athletes had to participate in all three events – speed, bouldering and lead – for a chance to win a medal.
The sport returned to the Paris Games in a new format with speed being a standalone event.
