China completed an historic clean sweep of diving gold medals at the Paris Olympics, after Cao Yuan retained his 10m platform title to make it eight wins out of eight for the powerhouse.

As much as the nation has dominated the sport in recent years, it has never taken home every gold medal at a single Games. It came close twice in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro, with seven wins

However, the once-elusive achievement did not come easy. Cao was locked in a tight battle against Japan's Rikuto Tamai, with the pair separated by less than three points after four rounds.

But that all changed in the penultimate round, when Tamai committed a serious error on his routine and dropped out of contention.

Cao finished with 547.50 points after six rounds, compared to 507.65 for the Japanese, which was good for silver.

Noah Williams of Great Britain propelled himself to a bronze with a sensational final dive worth 94.35 points.

But Yang Hao, the reigning world champion who beat his compatriot Cao at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha in February, not only was a surprise omission from the podium, but finished last out of the 12 finalists.
