The Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers on Tuesday put forward suggestions regarding data education in schools, a day before Chief Executive John Lee was set to deliver his next policy address.
The ideas include a solid blueprint for artificial intelligence (AI) education, and training on the ethical use of AI.
The federation's vice-president, Lawrence Tang, said data education should begin in primary school, with material about AI added to information technology lessons.
He added that resources should be allocated for an AI platform specifically tailored to education.
Ray Cheung, the federation's vice-chairman, said the government ought to be more proactive when it comes to AI.
"We believe the government, internally, they need to have a policy and influence the whole society not only in the education sector but also in other sectors," he said.
"We believe this is very crucial and important for a better Hong Kong."
