Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau said on Friday that RTHK is committed to strengthening its role as a public broadcaster and enhancing co-operation with other government departments.
Speaking at a Legislative Council panel meeting on the latest Policy Address, he said RTHK is also supporting youth development and helping young people learn more about national policies.
Director of Broadcasting Angelina Kwan told lawmakers in the same meeting that RTHK has prepared a full range of programmes for the upcoming National Games.
She said new series have already been launched, including joint productions with CCTV and Guangzhou Broadcasting Network, to raise the profiles of athletes, events and cultural attractions in host cities.
Lawmakers welcomed RTHK’s efforts, with the DAB's Holden Chow noting that more English-language programming has been put on air for foreigners in Hong Kong and suggested they be used to strengthen international communication.
Business and Professionals Alliance lawmaker Lo Wai-kwok praised RTHK for its production of some popular shows and urged it to play a bigger role in promoting government policies, especially achievements in innovation and technology.
In response, Yau said RTHK has always operated in line with its charter, adding that it will continue to produce programmes that appeal to audiences.
Kwan said the broadcaster would uphold its mission under the charter, make good use of public funds, provide accurate and positive information, and continue to highlight both Hong Kong’s and the nation’s development stories.
