The chairman of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, Bernard Chan, said he's confident that Hong Kong can consolidate its role as an East-meets-West cultural and arts hub.

According to the consultation document for the city's first five-year plan, Hong Kong will develop and consolidate its position as a centre for international cultural exchange, and develop diversified cultural, arts and creative industries.

In an interview on the RTHK programme "Vision 15: Hong Kong's Chapter", Chan said the SAR is an ideal platform for international cultural projects, as well as a draw for top artistic talent from around the world.

"We have local talent, and we can also attract the best talent from around the world to Hong Kong," he said.

"Most of the time, it’s not just about the collections, but also curation and performance styles. These make us special because we truly have an East-meets-West exchange. Society hopes to see a blend of Asian and Western styles."

Chan pointed out that while the West Kowloon hub represents the public aspect of the city's arts and cultural ecosystem, the private market is growing, with activities such as auctioning, art storage and arts-related investment.

He also said the central government has recognised Hong Kong's cultural development efforts.

Chan added that many international cultural institutions visiting Hong Kong over the past two years affirmed the city's work and expressed hopes for collaboration.

He said this shows Hong Kong's status as a cultural and arts hub has elevated to an even higher level.
