Commerce chief slams US tariffs, but plays down impact

Hong Kong's commerce secretary Algernon Yau has criticised the United States for imposing an additional 10 percent tariff on all Chinese imports. The move also covers goods from Hong Kong. As Sophie Hui reports, Mr Yau called on the Trump administration to rectify the situation as soon as possible.
Removal of US duty waiver to hit Chinese e-commerce firms

Hongkong Post says it will continue to turn away postal items containing goods to the United States. A government spokesman says that Hongkong Post is now communicating with the US Postal Service to clarify certain matters, including the imposition of additional duty. Meanwhile, Chinese e-commerce firms are expected to be dealt a heavy blow after the US scrapped a century-old duty free exemption on packages worth less than US$800. Chloe Feng reports.

A local business chamber says mainland and Hong Kong e-commerce companies may still be able to make profits, despite higher US tariffs and the duty-free exemption for parcels with a retail value of US$800 or less. Vice President of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Small and Medium Business, Stanley Lee, says while the tariff rise might have come suddenly, some products would still remain competitive in the US market. Puppies allegedly poisoned in Sheung Shui

Police suspect that three puppies found dead in Sheung Shui had been poisoned. An animal cruelty investigation is under way following the discovery of the carcasses near a warehouse in Lin Tong Mei on Thursday. Another dog was found alive, and was handed over to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. North District Councillor Corey Lau told Vanessa Cheng that there were dozens of suspected poisoning cases in recent months.

Israel says it has begun preparations for the departure of Palestinians from Gaza. That's despite international rejection of US President Donald Trump's plan to empty the territory of its population. The Trump administration has already dialled back aspects of the proposal after it was widely rejected internationally, saying the relocation of Palestinians would be temporary. In a social media post, Mr Trump has said that Israel would turn Gaza over to the United States after the war, and that no US soldiers would be needed for his plan to redevelop the enclave. Inferno of bodies, screams and smoke: Swedish police recall horrific shooting

Swedish police described a chaotic scene as more details emerge about Tuesday's mass shooting, the country's deadliest ever. At least 11 people were killed and several more injured in the attack on an educational campus some 200 kilometres west of the capital of Stockholm. Two days after the attack, police have still not confirmed the name of the shooter, although local media has identified the suspect. Jamie Clarke reports.
India under pressure to ensure fair treatment of deported migrants

India's foreign minister says New Delhi is engaging the United States to ensure that deported Indian immigrants are not mistreated during their journey home. That's after the country's opposition parties protested against the treatment of a group that was sent back on a US military plane earlier this week. The foreign minister has told parliament that US authorities were merely following existing protocol regarding the deportation of immigrants, which includes the use of restraining devices.
