Beijing gets ready for V-Day gathering and parade  Listenfacebook
China will hold a large-scale military parade in the capital on Wednesday morning, as part of commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The display will see troops march along Chang'an Avenue, a major route in the heart of Beijing that passes Tiananmen Square. President Xi Jinping and a group of foreign leaders will be on hand. RTHK reporter Frank Yung, who is in Beijing covering the commemorative events, spoke to Janice Lo at Tiananmen Square as final preparations were being made:

'China-Russia ties at unprecedentedly high level'  Listenfacebook
President Xi Jinping says China's relations with Russia have withstood the test of international changes. He made the statement when he met Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who said ties between Beijing and Moscow are at an unprecedented level. Their talks came on the eve of a grand parade in the capital to mark the 80th anniversary of China's victory and Japan's formal surrender in the Second World War. China to extend visa-free arrangement to more Russian visitors  Listenfacebook
Beijing is extending visa-free travel to ordinary passport holders from Russia on a trial basis. The visa exemption will run for a year from the middle of this month. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun spoke through an interpreter:
96 arrested for suspected drug trafficking  Listenfacebook
Police and customs officers have arrested 96 people of different nationalities in a joint anti-drugs operation between June and August. Officers say they believe that four of those arrested are the masterminds and core members of drug trafficking groups which find air passengers willing to smuggle drugs to Hong Kong. The death toll in a strong earthquake that rocked Afghanistan on Sunday night has risen to 1,400 with thousands more injured. Rescuers have stepped up the search for survivors near the border with Pakistan, and are trying to reach remote villages. Meanwhile, an earth scientist in Hong Kong says the high death toll in the Afghan quake was the result of poor building codes and a lack of education on disaster risks. Benjamin Horton, Dean and Chair Professor of Earth Science at City University, spoke to Hailey Yip:

Israeli reservists report for duty ahead of Gaza offensive  Listenfacebook
Tens of thousands of reservists have begun reporting for duty as the Israeli military presses ahead with its offensive to conquer Gaza City. Ground forces are already pushing into the outskirts of the city's largest urban area, which the military has said is a stronghold of Hamas. The Israeli prime minister wants to accelerate the assault, despite warnings from senior ranks. Jamie Clarke reports:

Hundreds of thousands of people braved the heat as they lined the streets of Hanoi to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's declaration of independence. They cheered and waved flags as they watched a military parade showcasing tanks, helicopters and fighter jets. The parade included military personnel from China, Russia and other countries. The landmark trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has entered its final phase. The country’s Supreme Court has begun hearing closing arguments in his case. He’s accused of orchestrating a plot to remain in power after he lost his 2022 re-election bid. Jamie Clarke has more:
