FS promotes joint digital currency platform Listen
Financial Secretary Paul Chan says there is growing interest for jurisdictions to use their own currency for trade. Speaking in Saudi Arabia, he said a multi-central bank digital currency platform was "worth pushing forward". Frank Yung reports:
Choi Hung Estate redevelopment to begin in 2028 Listen
There is great anticipation ahead after the government announced that Choi Hung Estate will be redeveloped in three phases, with the first batch of affected residents set to be relocated in about four years’ time. As Hailey Yip reports, the project is expected to wrap up in the year 2048, according to a paper submitted by housing authorities:

Lawmaker Bill Tang, who represents the Kowloon East Constituency, welcomed the redevelopment, given the ageing buildings could pose safety risks. But he pointed out that the neighbourhood would become a construction site for many years. Expert welcomes 'fair system' to resolve sports disputes Listen
A legal expert says the government's plan to establish a new sports arbitration resolution mechanism will help resolve disputes, such as the Messi no-show saga, more quickly and amicably. The idea was unveiled in the recent Policy Address amid a rise in the complexity of sports disputes. Nicholas Chan, who heads the AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre, said the new mechanism would save a lot of time and cost. He spoke to Kelly Yu:
Lower blood glucose levels to reduce cancer risks Listen
The University of Hong Kong says diabetes patients can lower the risk of getting colorectal and liver cancers by controlling their blood glucose levels. They are the second and fifth most common cancers in the SAR. The university's Faculty of Medicine conducted two territory-wide analyses using 17 years of Hospital Authority data of 140,000 diabetes patients. It found that by controlling blood glucose levels, these patients can lower the chances of getting colorectal cancer by 28 percent and liver cancer by 30 percent. At least 95 die in flash floods in Spain Listen
Flash floods in Spain have killed at least 95 people in the worst natural disaster to hit the European nation in recent memory. Spain’s government has declared three days of mourning as the floods devastate the country’s south and eastern regions. Rainstorms that started on Tuesday have continued until now, sweeping away cars, turning village streets into rivers and disrupting both rail lines and highways. Jamie Clarke reports:
Harris distances herself from Biden's 'garbage' comment Listen
In the US presidential election, Kamala Harris has distanced herself from a comment in which her boss - President Biden - appeared to describe supporters of Donald Trump as “garbage”. The president claims he was only referring to one specific supporter - a comedian who made a racist joke about Puerto Rico at a Trump rally last weekend in New York. But Trump leapt on the comment, using it as ammunition to attack his opponent. RTHK's Simon Marks reports from Washington:
Hoax threats wreak havoc as India gears up for Diwali Listen
The most celebrated holiday for Hindus, Diwali - also known as The Festival of Lights - takes place on Thursday, overlapping with Halloween. It represents the triumph of light over darkness and righteousness over evil. Authorities in India are on heightened alert to ensure smooth celebrations across the country. It comes at a time when Indian airlines have received over 100 hoax bomb threats over the past week, wreaking havoc on the country's travel sector. RTHK's South Asia correspondent, Murali Krishnan, told Azam Khan that the unprecedented number of hoax threats appeared to be originating from abroad and were affecting airlines' revenues:
Oldest-known tadpole fossil found in Argentina Listen
Scientists have discovered the oldest-known fossil of a giant tadpole which lived alongside dinosaurs in the Middle Jurassic period. The fossil was unearthed four years ago in Argentina but research into it has only just been published. Jamie Clarke reports:
Beijing files complaint over steep tariffs on Chinese EVs Listen
Beijing has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organisation as European Union tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles took effect. The bloc has imposed an additional duty of up to 35 percent, claiming that state subsidies have made cars manufactured on the mainland cheaper. Natale Ching reports:
