FSD checks fire safety equipment at 1,000 buildings Listen
Fire officers have conducted more than 8,200 checks at about 1,000 old buildings across the city. As Anne Chan reports, authorities were monitoring the improvements made at high-risk buildings after April's deadly blaze at a residential block in Jordan that claimed five lives.
Online shopping scams on the rise Listen
Police say online shopping scams rose by 23 percent in the first ten months of the year from a year ago, with losses doubling to over HK$330 million. There is also an emerging trend of Carousell phishing scams, where swindlers target sellers through fake payment processes and phishing links. Janice Lo asked chief executive of the Consumer Council, Gilly Wong, for her advice to consumers.
'Be careful when buying anti-dandruff shampoo' Listen
Choose your anti-dandruff shampoo carefully. That's the message from the Consumer Council after it found substances banned by the European Union in some products on the market. Hailey Yip reports.
'Establish rules for claw machines' Listen
The Consumer Council has also called for a review of claw machine regulations after seeing an increase in the number of complaints about the games. The council received 42 complaints from January to November this year, three times more than during the same period last year. Complainants alleged machine settings were manipulated, with pincers automatically loosening, and a minimum spend required in order to win a prize. Currently, operators do not need a licence to open claw machine shops, which have popped up all over the city. Kenneth Chan, vice chairman of the council's publicity and community relations committee, told Kelly Yu about their findings.
Walled City interactive exhibit moves to Kai Tak Listen
An enhanced interactive exhibition dedicated to the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City has moved from the airport to Kai Tak's airside mall. That allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the sets from the hit film: "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In". Natale Ching tells us more.

'Better blood sugar management reduces infection risks' Listen
A medical research team found that people with type two diabetes are more likely to get viral infections, emphasising the importance of keeping blood sugar levels under control. After analysing 40 blood samples from patients with type two diabetes, researchers from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong discovered a connection between high blood glucose levels and reduced immunity to viral infections. One of the researchers, Dr Paul Lee, told Hailey Yip that patients need to improve their blood sugar management to help reduce the strain on healthcare systems as infections soar.
Germany's Scholz loses confidence vote Listen
Germany's centre-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz has lost a confidence vote after weeks of turmoil. The development sets Europe's biggest economy on the path to early elections on February the 23rd. Scholz had expected to lose the vote held at the national parliament, Bundestag, allowing the country's president Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve the legislature and formally order an election. Janice Wong spoke to Gavin Grey, our correspondent in London.
Softbank to invest US$100 billion in the US Listen
Japanese investment company, SoftBank, is planning to invest US$100 billion in projects in the United Sates over the next four years. The company’s CEO joined US president-elect Donald Trump to announce the planned investments at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. Jamie Clarke has more.
TikTok asks Supreme Court to temporarily block looming US ban Listen
TikTok has asked the US Supreme Court to temporarily block a law that would force its Chinese owner to sell the popular online video-sharing platform or shut down a month from now. It asked for the move to be put on hold while it challenges a lower court ruling that upheld the law. Sean Kennedy reports.
Rescue efforts continue after cyclone wreaks havoc in Mayotte Listen
France has been using ships and military aircraft to rush rescue workers and supplies to its tiny Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte. That’s after the island group was battered by its worst cyclone in nearly a century over the weekend. Several hundred people are already feared death, but authorities fear the final toll could be in the thousands. Residents have described the aftermath as “chaos” – as Jamie Clarke reports.
Musician Zakir Hussain dies at 73 Listen
Zakir Hussain, one of India’s most accomplished classical musicians, has died at the age of seventy-three. His family has issued a statement saying he died from complications to a chronic lung disease, at a hospital in San Francisco on Sunday. Hussain’s music defied genres and introduced the ‘tabla’ to a global audience. Here's Jamie Clarke.
Marie Antoinette's watch displayed in London Listen
