Development Secretary Bernadette Linn has shot down a lawmaker's suggestion that people who are fined for large scale illegal structures should be allowed to keep them if they're not dangerous. The government is seeking to amend the Buildings Ordinance and increase the maximum fine for unauthorised works to HK$2 million. Vanessa Cheng reports.

US stocks have tumbled to one of their worst days of the year after the Federal Reserve said it’s cutting its main interest rate for a third time this year. The trend started in September when the Fed began lowering rates from a two-decade high to support the job market. That cut, though, was widely expected. Jamie Clarke has more.
UK inflation rises in November  Listenfacebook
UK annual inflation has climbed further above the Bank of England's target rate in November. The Consumer Prices Index reached 2.6 percent in the 12 months to November. That's up from 2.3 percent for October.Expectations now are that the UK's central bank won't be cutting rates...that's in contrast with the latest move by the US Federal Reserve, and the European Central Bank's decision that it would keep cutting interest rates. Earlier, Ben Tse asked RTHK's London correspondent Gavin Grey if this upward movement in inflation was expected.
China breaks record for longest space walk  Listenfacebook
Chinese astronauts have broken a 23-year-old record for the world's longest spacewalk, after completing an historic nine-hour extra-vehicular activity outside the Tiangong space station. The previous record from 2001 held by the US lasted eight hours and 56 minutes. As Azam Khan reports, the 17th spacewalk by the Chinese astronauts achieved a lot of "firsts".

Russia’s security service says it has detained a citizen from Uzbekistan in relation to the bombing that killed a senior army general on Tuesday. The bold assassination in southeastern Moscow was claimed by Ukraine’s security service. It once again brought the nearly three-year war in Ukraine to the streets of the Russian capital. Moscow says the suspect has confessed to planting and detonating the bomb. Jamie Clarke has more.

Israeli troops continue their incursion into the occupied Golan Heights, a buffer zone between Israel and Syria that is monitored by the United Nations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that troops would remain in the area indefinitely. The lawmakers say the photos have obviously been altered, with their faces superimposed over the original image.
