President Xi Jinping has called on Macau to better integrate into the nation's strategic development. He made the comments during a speech at a gala dinner on Thursday night. As Frank Yung reports, the president outlined his three expectations for the SAR, which celebrates its 25th anniversary on Friday.

As the Macau SAR celebrates its 25th anniversary, it's time to take a look at its major policy achievements and milestones. Since its return to the motherland in 1999, the former Portuguese territory has transformed into a multi-faceted hub, evolving beyond its moniker as the "Las Vegas of the East." Per capita GDP has more than quadrupled and people's livelihoods have improved. Azam Khan takes us through some of the city's distinctive accomplishments.
Relief for homebuyers as HKMA cuts base interest rate  Listenfacebook
There's relief for homebuyers and businesses after the Hong Kong Monetary Authority cut its base interest rate by 25 basis points to 4.75 percent with immediate effect. Commercial banks followed suit, but some trimmed their best lending rates by a lesser increment. The development follows a rate reduction by the US Federal Reserve. Hong Kong's de facto central bank also says the city's property market is showing signs of stabilising, with transactions increasing steadily and prices rising marginally. Raymond Yeung reports.

Hong Kong's property market should start to pick up next year if the current rate-reduction cycle continues, according to consultancy firm Cushman and Wakefield. Executive director Rosanna Tang told Anne Chan that home transactions and prices have already stabilised since September, when the US Federal Reserve began reducing its benchmark rate.

People are downplaying negative effects of drug abuse: survey  Listenfacebook
A recent survey by the Hong Kong Christian Service has found that more than half of drug users waited years before seeking help, and many downplayed the negative effects of drug abuse. It polled over 300 users between September and November, and found 55 percent sought treatment only after using drugs for more than three years. The study also found around nine percent of respondents reported using "space oil" - a regulated sedative typically inhaled through vapes. Psychiatrist Dr Matthew Wong spoke to Kelly Yu about the study.

A think tank founded by executive councillor Ronny Tong has urged the financial secretary explore new revenue streams and reduce public expenditure in his upcoming budget. Among the Path of Democracy's proposals are cutting annual government spending by three percent, bumping up betting duties and introducing a 5 percent tax on winnings. Tong, who's the group's convenor, told Kimmy Lau that the measures should not adversely impact citizens' welfare.

A court in France has sentenced a man to 20 years in jail for committing and orchestrating the mass rapes of his now former wife Gisele Pelicot with dozens of strangers. Dominique Pelicot -- who had already confessed to the crimes of drugging his wife for almost a decade so he and strangers he recruited online could rape her -- was earlier found guilty by the court in the city of Avignon. His 50 co-defendants were also convicted by the court, with no acquittals. Ben Tse spoke to our UK correspondent Peter Anderson.

The suspect in the killing of an insurance executive in the United States faces new federal charges. Luigi Mangione arrived at a New York courthouse after dropping his fight to be extradited from the state of Pennsylvania earlier. His hearing in Manhattan adjourned after just fifteen minutes. Mr Mangione will remain in New York custody. He said little during the proceedings, nodding along as his rights and the charges against him were read out. He’ll next appear in federal court on the eighteenth of January, although that is subject to change Jamie Clarke has more.

The wife of imprisoned former Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak has been acquitted of money laundering and tax evasion charges. The country’s High Court said that the seventeen charges against Rosmah Masor lacked probity, propriety and legality. However, she is not quite out of the woods yet – as Jamie Clarke reports.

Republicans in the US Congress have agreed on a new funding package aimed at averting a holiday-season government shutdown, after an earlier cross-party deal was derailed by President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk. But Democrats have dismissed the deal, as Sean Kennedy reports.

US space agency Nasa says two US astronauts stranded for months on the International Space Station will have to remain there until at least late March. It's another delay in the mission to bring home Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams -- who had arrived at the ISS in June. As Natale Ching reports, they were supposed to be on the orbiting laboratory for only eight days.
