The chairman of power company CLP, Michael Kadoorie, said Hong Kong should not set limits for collaborations with countries taking part in the Belt and Road Initiative, as all sectors have potential under the nation’s development strategy.

Kadoorie is part of Chief Executive John Lee’s delegation attending the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He told RTHK that the initiative is a “step-by-step process”, and stressed that Hong Kong has a role to play.

“We have a lot that we can bring to the mainland in terms of the enhancement of the Belt and Road, which, of course, is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

“I don't think you can single any sector out – in expertise in the hospitality sector, in the green sector.”

Kadoorie, who is also the chairman of Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, said Belt and Road countries can learn from the SAR’s experience in hospitality.

“We have extremely good hotels… From a hospitality angle, people can come into Hong Kong and then to the mainland, to the many cities, the many sites. Hospitality is not just for Hong Kong, it's [for the] whole of China,” he said.

Meanwhile, Betty Yuen, a director with the CLP power firm, said the SAR has a lot to offer to the initiative.

“Hong Kong has a lot of very good professional services, whether it is in architecture [or] engineering. We also see a lot of professional architects. Their designs are being adopted in many parts of the world, [with] very impressive buildings or other infrastructure developments,” she told RTHK.

But she added that many collaborations in the past few years focused on infrastructure, so more cooperation in different areas, including the green economy and digital economy, can be pursued.
