Hong Kong windsurfers Alex Cheng and Mui Ma have both crashed out of the iQFOiL competition on the final day of preliminary action in Marseille, which was cut short by a lack of winds.

Cheng entered the day ranked ninth overall out of 24 men's entrants, having won a race yesterday.

But he dropped to 13th overall after coming back fifth, 19th and 15th in the three races of the day which went underway following lengthy delays.

The two remaining races were scrapped, meaning the 24-year-old had no chance to make up lost ground. Only the top 10 surfers would reach the knockout stage.

Ma, on the other hand, fell two places to finish 14th overall.

She was disqualified on the first race on Thursday, and placed 15th and 10th in the ensuing two. Like the men's competition, the two final women's races were cancelled.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong sailor Nicholas Halliday has a lot of catching up to do after the opening day of dinghy competition in Marseille.

The 25-year-old Olympic debutante is placed 28th out of 43 after two races, with eight still to come over the coming four days.

The 10 participants with the fewest points advance to the medal race. The winner for each race is awarded one point, and the runner-up two, and so on.

Halliday is now on 49 points, compared with 27 for Jean-Baptiste Bernaz of France in 10th place.
