The SAR's table tennis team of Doo Hoi-kem, Lee Ho-ching and Zhu Chengzhu was unable to advance to the next stage of the women's team competition, losing 3-2 to Sweden in the round of 16.

The first three matches between the teams went the distance.

Sweden’s Filippa Bergand and Christina Kallberg won the first two games in the first match 11-9, 11-5. The SAR pair of Doo and Lee made a strong comeback and won the next three games 11-9, 11-4 and 11-8.

Zhu Chengzhu took on Sweden’s Linda Bergstrom in the second match. After a tight back and forth, Bergstrom ultimately came out victorious to bring an overall tie.

Doo played against Kallberg in the third match and won the first two games 11-5, before losing the next three to the Sweden player 8-11 and 3-11 and 10-12.

In the fourth match, Zhu dominated the three games 11-8, 11-4 and 11-6.

But Lee lost 5-11, 6-11, and 10-12 in the final and decisive match against Bergstrom, bringing their Olympic journey to an end.

Doo took responsibility for the loss, saying she let Kallberg back in the game.

"I feel I share a bigger responsibility for the defeat because I dropped the third match, it's what led to a loss for the team," she told reporters.

Lee, meanwhile, said she felt the team had no regrets because they had done their best.

She added she had played Bergstrom before and had a tough time.

"In the first two games against her [this time], it seems I couldn't really find good ways to make a breakthrough," she told reporters.

"And then, when I found a way in the third game, it was too late. My in-game adjustments weren't bold enough."

The SAR women’s table tennis team took home bronze in the Tokyo Games.
