The Liberal Party announced on Thursday it's seeking to field five people, including two incumbent lawmakers, in December’s Legislative Council election.

The incumbents are Peter Shiu of the wholesale and retail sector and Michael Lee of the Election Committee.

Southern district councillor Jonathan Leung is expected to join the race in the hope of succeeding outgoing catering-sector lawmaker Tommy Cheung, who is also the party chairman.

Two other hopefuls are looking to contest in the geographical constituencies – in which the party didn’t have anyone competing in the 2021 polls.

Cheung, along with transport-sector lawmaker Frankie Yick, earlier declared they would not seek re-election.

Asked why the party was fielding candidates in geographical constituencies now but not four years ago, he said: “We are looking for candidates.

"We see if our candidates or our party members are ready for certain positions and whether they are willing to invest the time.

“We just have to work election campaigns like we normally do.”

Nominations for the polls begin on Friday.
