Candidates competing in the New Territories South East constituency have suggested various proposals to strike a balance between ecotourism and conservation at a government-organised forum for the upcoming Legislative Council elections.

All five hopefuls taking part in Friday's election forum are incumbent district councillors.

The DAB's Chris Ip said efforts to protect the environment and promote development can coexist.

"We should merge intangible cultural heritage and local culture with ecotourism to boost district economy," Ip said. "I also hope that barriers and restrictions in policies can be relaxed to build a high-quality living environment."

Social worker Janet Lee of the Federation of Trade Unions said restricting visitor numbers is essential.

"I propose requiring registration and setting up a quota system to control visitor flow and protect environmental resources," Lee said. "We should make good use of historical sites related to patriotism for patriotic education and revitalise the tourism sector as well as the economy."

Professional Power's Christine Fong, who is an engineer, called for tougher surveillance on outlying islands.

"The government should put in crowd control measures, and beef up patrols and law enforcement actions. Officials should also encourage tourists to join certified and standardised guided tours," Fong said.

Non-affiliated Chris Cheung voiced concerns of a repeat of what previously happened in Sai Kung's High Island Reservoir and Sharp Island.

"What if a viral video or photo by a social media influencer suddenly caused an overwhelming influx of visitors? I think areas with high ecological value should be designated as protection zones," Cheung said.

Victor Chan of New People's Party, meanwhile, proposed boosting connectivity in the area.

"My hope is to for a pier to be built in Tseung Kwan O, with ferry rides reaching Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, Wan Chai and West Kowloon. The rides can serve transport and tourism purposes," Chan said.

A total of 39 "Patriots Collaborate for Good Governance" election forums are being organised by the government, covering the geographical, functional and Election Committee constituencies.

All of the forums are broadcast live on RTHK TV31 and RTHK Radio 1.
