National security police on Tuesday said they had arrested a man on suspicion of sedition and using social media to incite people not to vote or to cast blank ballots in next month's Legco elections.
Officers said their investigation began in September 2024 after they identified a "suspicious" social media account with posts that allegedly contained incendiary remarks against the government, judiciary and law enforcement agencies.
Superintendent Chan On-ming of the National Security Department said the account recently focused on encouraging people to boycott the upcoming elections.
A man, 68, was arrested on suspicion of committing an act with a seditious intention and violating the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance.
"The police would like to reiterate that publishing inciting materials and persuading others not to vote or to cast invalid votes during elections is a serious crime," Chan said.
