One newcomer and a veteran professional contesting the tourism constituency in the upcoming Legislative Council polls took centre stage on Thursday, as they sought to offer ways to contribute to the sector at a government-led election forum.
Retired epee fencer Vivian Kong, who won a gold medal in the Paris Olympics, conceded that she lacks experience in the field, but vowed to "make up for lost time".
"In fact, I am going through a transformation just like the tourism industry," Kong said.
"I will listen closely to the industry's opinions, balance the interests of the industry with a new viewpoint and consolidate forces, to push for more resources for the tourism industry."
Her rival, Marco Ma, pointed to his 27 years in the industry, saying his job is a lifelong career.
"The tourism industry is at a critical stage of advancing from stability to prosperity," Ma said.
"[The sector] needs someone with rich experience in the tourism industry and in politics, and who is competent, honest and reliable to be a member of the Legislative Council."
A total of 39 "Patriots Collaborate for Good Governance" election forums are being organised by the government, covering the geographical, functional and Election Committee constituencies.
All the forums are broadcast live on RTHK TV31 and RTHK Radio 1.
