Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday that the Legislative Council elections will go ahead as planned on December 7, saying he needs partners in the legislature to carry out reforms in the wake of the deadly Tai Po fire.

Lee said allowing new lawmakers to take office quickly will speed up aid and rebuilding following the blaze, as well as reviews and reforms. Many of these require Legco deliberation, funding approval and lawmaking before they can proceed, he added.

Lee said holding the elections as scheduled will adhere to constitutional order and the spirit of the rule of law, adding that it will maintain social stability.

"The reform partners I need most are Legislative Council members. Having experienced this fire, they understand our shared pain. They will undoubtedly collaborate with the government to promote reforms, conduct due diligence on funding and enact relevant legislation. Electing capable and aspiring Legislative Council members is an important step on the road to rebuilding,” he said.

Meanwhile, the CE thanked donors for supporting the Tai Po fire victims. The government has so far received HK$1.3 billion in public donations on top of its initial funding of HK$300 million.

Lee said the proceeds will be used to help residents affected rebuild their lives.
