Hong Kong is making final preparations for the 2025 Legislative Council election on Sunday, with authorities urging for broad participation and the MTR Corporation announcing extended train services to facilitate the poll.

Chief Executive John Lee, together with Electoral Affairs Commission chairman David Lok and Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang, inspected polling arrangements on Saturday.

They visited a general polling station at Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre and a near-boundary station at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Passenger Clearance Building to observe staff rehearsing electronic poll register and ballot-counting procedures.

In a social media post, Lee highlighted efforts to make voting more convenient.

In addition to existing near-boundary stations in Sheung Shui, new stations also include another at the airport to assist residents travelling to or from the mainland and overseas.

Lee said this year’s election also introduces several new arrangements, including pilot outreach polling stations for residential care homes and designated stations for civil servants, Hospital Authority staff and ethnic minorities.

He called on all eligible voters to take part actively in selecting “ambitious, capable and responsible lawmakers".

"With the improvement of the electoral system in the SAR, the representation in the Legislative Council is more comprehensive and balanced, reflecting a greater diversity of voices and opinions that represent both regional and sectoral interests, as well as the overall interests of Hong Kong," Lee said.

Meanwhile, the MTR announced that most rail lines will start services earlier than usual on election day to help polling staff reach their stations.

The earliest departure will be on the Tuen Ma line, with services from Wu Kai Sha to Tuen Mun commencing at 5.02am.
