Chief Executive John Lee on Sunday urged voters to cast their ballots in the Legislative Council election, saying they would be helping to promote reform and support victims of the Tai Po fire.
Speaking to reporters after casting his ballot at a Mid-levels polling station, Lee said lots of work needed to be done to find out the truth behind the tragedy at Wang Fuk Court, and his administration would move a motion in the first meeting of the new Legco on how to support fire victims, and on rebuilding.
“The Legislative Council has has a lot of powers – for example, in approving spending or making new laws,” Lee said.
“We will work together to plug loopholes in our existing system, reinforce the safety of our city, and give residents a greater sense of security.
“So all voters must come out to cast a ballot today, because this vote represents reform, safeguarding victims of the fire, and our unity in marching forward together.”
The CE also said the government has taken many measures to make voting more convenient – such as setting up more than 660 polling stations across the territory and extending voting hours by two hours, from 7.30 am to 11.30 pm.
He said he found voting to be smooth and convenient, and officers at his polling station gave clear explanations.
