Hong Kong residents turned out early Sunday morning to cast their ballots in the Legislative Council elections, with many applauding the simple voting process.

At a polling station in the Mid-Levels, voters told RTHK the procedure was straightforward and efficient.

"It's very quick and very convenient. I just need to bring my Hong Kong ID, and then I get to vote. I just need to stamp on it, then it's finished like in one minute," said a woman surnamed Liu.

"It's about Hong Kong's future. I want Hong Kong to be more active and I want Hong Kong to be safer than all the world."

Many said they participated to fulfill their civic responsibility.

A man surnamed Li emphasised the importance of electing capable lawmakers.

"I think it's very important for the citizens to exercise their voting rights and to elect someone that is capable and suitable to contribute to the development of Hong Kong for the next chapter," he said.

"I think Hong Kong is moving into a new era of development. I think in a lot of important areas we need policy innovations.

"I think we need to elect the candidates that have new visions and new policy ideas that can address the challenges and then to capitalise on the new opportunities that Hong Kong would have."

Another voter surnamed Zhou said she had encouraged friends and family to vote for the sake of Hong Kong’s development.

"It's our civic duty especially since a lot of big events have happened in Hong Kong, so I hope the new legislators-elect can do something constructive for the city," she said.

A man surnamed Wong, also at the polls, expressed hope that the new Legislative Council would work effectively for the benefit of Hong Kong’s citizens.
