The chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission said on Sunday that electing a new Legislative Council is essential to enact laws aimed at preventing future tragedies and helping the community heal in the wake of the deadly Tai Po fire.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting polling stations, including a special station set up at the airport, David Lok expressed his profound sorrow over the Wang Fuk Court fire that claimed at least 159 lives.
"I think especially in such a difficult time, voters need to cast their vote in this election and fulfil their civic responsibilities in a serious manner," he said.
"Choosing a new Legislative Council to carry out its important functions is essential for the interests of Hong Kong."
He stressed that it is necessary to elect a new council so that they can legislate to prevent similar situations from happening again and help heal the wounds of the community.
He hopes all voters, particularly those impacted by the fire, will actively participate to help Hong Kong move towards recovery.
Before voting began, the commission held a moment of silence to mourn the victims of the fire.
