Longtime Sai Kung District Councillor Christine Fong romped to an overwhelming victory in the New Territories South East geographical constituency race in the Legislative Council elections.

The veteran politician and engineer topped all other legislator-elects with 58,828 votes.

Fong said she was happy to be elected into Legco, but stressed that there is an urgent need to deal with the aftermath of the Tai Po tragedy.

"At the same time, I should prepare for the Tai Po fire incident, this tragedy to all Hong Kong citizens is really sad," she said after being announced as the winner.

The DAB's Chris Ip won the second seat in the constituency with 26,250 votes.

Ip said he would work closely with the government, adding that improving transport links in the area was on his to-do list.

District councillor Chan Chi-ho came in a distant third with 18,797 votes.
