The Chinese University of Hong Kong on Thursday announced it will set up a 10th college that will be dedicated to postgraduate studies, as it unveiled its five-year plan.

As the only local university that has a collegiate system, CUHK said the new college will create an environment for “cross-disciplinary dialogue, holistic development and lifelong networking”.

Speaking at the launch ceremony for the five-year plan, CUHK provost Isabella Poon said the new college will enhance postgraduate students' overall learning experience, and help those from outside Hong Kong set down roots in the city.

“We will harness CUHK’s unique college culture and provide overseas scholars and their families with comprehensive on-the-ground and living support to allow every scholar who comes to CUHK to find a sense of belonging here,” she said.

Poon added it would be ideal if these scholars can stay for decades and make the institution their home.

In its five-year plan, CUHK said it is focusing on bringing academic excellence and global impact to new heights.

Its strategic Leaping to Greatness blueprint is built around five themes: talent attraction and development, institutional development, global and alumni engagement, education and student experience, and research and innovation, or Tiger for short.

CUHK vice-chancellor and president Dennis Lo said apart from continuing to achieve breakthroughs in various areas, such as life and health sciences, and artificial intelligence, the institution will also take part in national scientific initiatives to cultivate world-class talent.

"The five key areas of the strategic plan form the Tiger action framework that embodies courage, agility and drive, underscoring CUHK’s development vision which will be realised through precise planning and rigorous execution," he said in a statement.

The institution will also step up collaboration with its Shenzhen branch, as well as other institutions in the Greater Bay Area and increase exchange and internship opportunities outside the SAR to support its students.

At the launch ceremony, Lo said a number of consultations were held in the making of the blueprint.

“As the name suggests, it represents CUHK’s determination to keep up with the times and continuously striving for improvement, just like an energetic and ambitious tiger leaping with all its might and break through boundaries, and take on greater responsibilities," he said.

The plan – which took about a year to formulate – is the university's first five-year plan since Lo took office in January last year.

“It marks a major milestone in the university’s development in timely alignment with the five-year planning of China and the Hong Kong SAR,” he added.
