Labour and Welfare Secretary Chris Sun says the government will support companies setting up childcare centres in the Northern Metropolis as part of a wider push to encourage families amid a falling birth rate.

In an interview with RTHK's "Vision 15: Hong Kong's Chapter", Sun suggested that childcare centres in the Northern Metropolis could follow the model of the Airport Preschool, which provides childcare for airport employees.

He acknowledged that childcare centres must meet certain legal standards, but said the government is ready to assist firms that want to set one up for its staff.

"The Northern Metropolis is industry‑driven, and it also has a university town. People who work there will be more educated, they'll be technical staff or elites in their fields. Their childcare needs may be different," he said.

"If companies with the capability are interested in running their own childcare centres, we will give them our full support."

As for other districts across the city, Sun said the focus will be on providing more diverse childcare options especially for toddlers under two.

He noted some parents may prefer childcare centres close to their workplaces, making it easier for them to pick up and drop off their children.
