Sports minister Rosanna Law on Sunday said the government is conducting a technical feasibility study on the redevelopment of the Victoria Park Centre Court.

Her remarks came after the latest Policy Address proposed redeveloping it into an all-weather, multi-purpose venue for hosting larger-scale and higher-level sports events, as well as performance activities.

Speaking on a TVB programme, Law said the venue would be equipped with a retractable roof in future, as high-level tennis tournaments require outdoor play.

She said the authorities were studying whether there are faster construction options that aren’t too expensive.

“We hope to start the design work as soon as possible, and we hope to begin construction within the first five-year plan period,” she said.

“We will proceed as quickly as possible, whether construction begins in three or four years.

“As for when it will be completed, my estimate is that it will be towards the beginning of the next five-year plan period.”

During the revamp of the Victoria Park court, large-scale tennis competitions could be held at Hong Kong Stadium, the secretary for culture, sports and tourism said.
