Chief Executive John Lee on Tuesday urged the press to drive society forward by reporting objectively and fairly, while serving as a messenger to tell the good stories of the nation and Hong Kong.

Speaking at a media sector reception celebrating the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Lee also said the SAR government will continue to help local media enhance their competitiveness.

“Hong Kong’s first five-year plan mentioned strengthening the global reach of the mainstream media. In my Policy Address this year, I noted that the government will continue to assist the local media to expand their network beyond Hong Kong,” he said.

“The SAR government supports local media to continue to increase their international communication capacity and competitiveness, thereby telling the good stories of the city and the nation to a broader audience,” he said.

Lee also described the press as a transmitter of public sentiment that guides people's hearts and minds, urging professional media workers to uphold professional ethics when reporting the facts.
