‘Taiwan should be wary of taking in alleged LegCo protesters’  Listenfacebook
There was a mixed reaction on Friday to media reports that a group of anti-extradition protesters has sought political asylum in Taiwan. The Apple Daily reported that 30 protesters who stormed into the Legislative Council on July 1 have sought refuge in Taiwan - and 30 more plan to do the same. Radio Free Asia also reported that charities on the island are looking after about 10 protesters. Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen said authorities on the island are aware of the matter, while rival lawmakers here in Hong Kong disagreed with what it means to the SAR's international reputation. Professor Willy Lam of Chinese University told Annemarie Evans what he made of the current situation.
Town Planning Board should reclassify PLA dock in Central, says campaigner  Listenfacebook
The Central Harbourfront Concern Group on Friday called for most of the waterfront area ceded to the PLA to be reclassified as a public open space. The group said its proposal, which has been submitted to the Town Planning Board, will not affect the use of the area as a dock, as the buildings and landing steps will remain in the military zone, while the public could enjoy the promenade area in between. Richard Pyne asked one of the campaigners, Southern District councillor Paul Zimmerman if it was too late to go back to the Town Planning Board.
US downing of Iranian drone a minor escalation: expert  Listenfacebook
Iran on Friday denied US claims that an Iranian drone was shot down by a US Navy ship in the Gulf. Over the past few weeks, there have been a number of murky incidents involving shipping in the Gulf which the US and its allies have generally blamed on Tehran. Earlier, the Iranians said they seized a vessel on Sunday that was smuggling oil. President Trump told reporters at the White House that the drone had flown within a thousand metres of the US vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, threatening the safety of its crew. Annemarie Evans asked Professor Paul Rogers, Professor of Peace Studies at Bradford University, for his take on this latest development.
