Legislator-elect Christine Fong says her top priority after assuming office will be pursuing reforms to fire safety and building maintenance regulations in the wake of the tragic Wang Fuk Court inferno in Tai Po.
After five failed attempts to win a Legislative Council seat over a span of 17 years, the veteran politician and engineer topped all other legislators-elect by scooping up nearly 59,000 votes.
“I hope I can reform some laws, especially in the face of [the Tai Po] disaster and the suffering of many families,” she told RTHK's Backchat programme.
“I hope I can work with the chief executive to help to reform the law, particularly in fire safety and also building maintenance laws.”
The government can, Fong added, subsidise building owners in hiring independent third-party consultants to investigate if there’s bid-rigging and corruption in maintenance contracts.
The long-time Sai Kung district councillor also thanked voters for their support and trust.
"I have served the community more than 17 years, and voters not only recognise my efforts but also share my aspiration to improve people's livelihood. That's most important,” Fong said.
