The police force's psychological services group on Tuesday said no officers who were deployed to Tai Po following the deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court suffered severe mental distress.

The group comprising of 13 clinical psychologists went to the scene to brief officers in advance, to get them mentally prepared for the situations they could face.

They later reached out to about 300 officers from the disaster victim identification unit to offer support services.

"They were actually adjusting ok. They might have some so-called symptoms or so-called emotional reactions," said one of the psychologists, Michael Fung.

"But these are normal given the parameters and the weight of the whole operation. I guess all people in Hong Kong will experience some sort of distress about the fire disaster."

Fung said some officers would recall sights and smells from the disaster scene.

"We have produced a series of psycho-educational materials for our officers to read at home, which include instructions about relaxation and the normal reactions after witnessing such traumatic events, including body scans, which is one of the techniques that we teach them," Fung said.

"They have a QR code, they can scan it and we have a sound clip to guide them for the relaxation exercise – the body scan exercise."

Another psychologist, Hazel Li, said the negative emotions from such traumatic events ease after about two to four weeks for most people.

She encouraged officers to maintain regular eating and exercising habits so they gradually think about what they encountered less often.
