People who own flats in Tai Po's fire-hit Wang Fuk Court are to be given HK$100,000 from the fund for victims which has swelled to some HK$3.4 billion thanks to donations from the public.
The government announced the move on Wednesday, with Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk noting that some owners who rented out their flats have lost a source of income.
"Existing support offered by the fund mainly focuses on residents. Some of them are tenants and not homeowners," he told reporters at a briefing.
"We understand that some homeowners rely on the rent they receive to pay for daily expenses. They've lost this source of income through the fire. Some homeowners also spent money on renovation and repairs and have therefore suffered losses and run into cash flow problems."
Cheuk said the latest subsidies have brought support measures to around HK$460 million in total.
He noted that some 1,600 households have each received a HK$100,000 "living allowance", more than 100 families of people killed have had a HK$200,000 "solidarity allowance", and more than 60 of those injured have received an extra HK$50,000 to HK$100,000.
The deputy minister, who leads a group on emergency aid and donations, added that government bureaus will keep looking into ways to help residents, which could include medium to long term support for those affected by the blaze two weeks ago.
He said the director of accounting services will be in charge of the fund's books, which will be submitted to the director of audit for scrutiny. A report on the fund, which received HK$300 million in taxpayer money, will also be submitted to Legco.
Cheuk said officials will start providing receipts for donations made to the fund to help donors get tax rebates.
