Federation of Trade Unions president Stanley Ng said on Monday it had told government officials that they should work out resettlement plans for Tai Po fire survivors as soon as possible.
That urgency was communicated in a meeting that the federation held with officials led by Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk and Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong at government headquarters on Monday.
The federation said it also passed on the results of interviews it held with some 1,800 Wang Fuk Court households that were conducted before the government surveyed owners on future rehousing options with its own questionnaire.
Ng said "not a small number" of residents had told the federation that they wanted to stay in the district as they loved its community.
However, he said finding a suitable location would take time.
"The government needs to provide diverse resettlement options. There are many households, their situations and demands differ," said Ng, who's also an executive councillor.
"The government should provide more options for all the needy households to choose from."
Ng stressed that it was important to help the displaced survivors return to normal lives as soon as possible.
Wong, meanwhile, said the government will proactively consider Wang Fuk Court rehousing options that are the most time efficient and pragmatic, while addressing the needs of the different parties as much as possible.
The minister thanked the federation for its views, saying officials will study them carefully.
