Chief Executive John Lee on Tuesday said that a significant number of Wang Fuk Court flat owners would consider selling their properties to the government.

Speaking ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting, Lee said authorities have collected views on the matter from most of the affected residents.

Initial findings, he said, show that the vast majority hope authorities will expedite long-term rehousing arrangements.

"A significant proportion of flat owners have expressed willingness to consider the government's acquisition of their ownership rights," he said.

"Some flat owners have indicated that they need to look at the actual acquisition price."

He added that a task force on accommodation arrangements, led by Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong, is actively working to resolve several key challenges.

These include handling the differing needs of families in a consistent manner, addressing issues of liability and compensation uncertainty related to the building’s public insurance and managing potential legal disputes that could cause prolonged delays.

"I have instructed the task force to promptly study the feasibility of various options and the legal issues, seek advice from the Department of Justice and propose arrangements as soon as possible," he said.

The chief executive acknowledged that this is a difficult period for residents and assured that the government is working diligently to finalise a plan.

This, he said, would allow affected residents to make the most suitable choice to rebuild their homes and lives.

Lee also noted that public funding may be used in the support arrangements, adding that officials will conduct prudent assessments to ensure effective use of resources.

He said the aim is to strike a balance between supporting the residents and ensuring the reasonable use of public funds.
