Hong Kong, China tennis star Coleman Wong has won gold in the men's singles at the Asian Games in Nagoya, beating the national team's Wu Yibing in straight sets.

Wong’s victory was also the SAR's first-ever medal in a tennis singles event.

The 22-year-old, ranked 100th in the world, got off to a strong start, claiming the first set 6-2 in 40 minutes, with the help of five aces, at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Centre.

But Wu fought back in the second set, pushing the SAR's top player hard.

With the set tied at four games all and Wu serving, Wong managed to break Wu’s serve but only after a run of deuces.

He then served out the match with aces galore, taking the final game without dropping a point.

Having won gold, Wong will qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics provided he still ranks in the global top 500 by June that year.

In a post-match interview, Wong said he is delighted to have won and sees the gold medal as a validation of his hard work.

“I am, of course, happy to have won a gold medal at the Asian Games," he said.

"In fact, my mind is quite blank now, but I'm really happy that I had kept my head down and kept practising hard.

“This [gold medal] is one of the checkpoints to remind myself that I am on right path.”

Wong also pointed to many variables, such as having no fixed playing times or courts, to express his delight at ultimately overcoming these obstacles.

Writing on social media, Sports Secretary Rosanna Law congratulated Wong.

She said his win brought the SAR's gold tally to eight, matching the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou.
