The head of the Hong Kong Sports Institute said the opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park could set the stage for the city to host large-scale events such as the Asian Games in future.
Officials have said they expect to complete the new facility, including a 50,000-seat main stadium, by the end of next year. It will stage a number of events for the 2025 National Games with Hong Kong serving as a co-host.
Tang King-shing said after appearing on a radio programme on Sunday that the park in Kai Tak, along with other planned investments, could pave the way for a bid to host the Asian Games.
Hong Kong's previous application for the 2006 Games was unsuccessful with Doha winning the bid.
"The government has another plan to build another government sports facility in the New Territories. That will provide additional sports facilities at international level. This will enhance Hong Kong's capability to host international sports events," he said.
The government announced last year that it plans to build a sports park in Ma On Shan, while also including large sports facilities in its Northern Metropolis project.
The Kai Tak Sports Park was expected to open this year but was delayed due to the Covid pandemic.
Tang added that the retractable roof at the main stadium means sports events can be held regardless of the weather conditions.
