A record showing by local athletes at the just-concluded Asian Games in Hangzhou serves as a boost for the SAR in the Paris Olympics next year, the chef de mission of the Hong Kong, China delegation said on Monday.
Kenneth Fok, who's also the sports sector lawmaker, said local athletes have met expectations when Hong Kong secured its highest medals tally ever.
"We can be very happy and proud to say that we have achieved our goal," Fok said.
He also said he believes the Hong Kong government now has a better understanding of the training needs of elite athletes, and the authorities will offer greater support to sports development.
Fok was speaking after a welcome-home ceremony was held at the airport by the government for athletes returning from the Asian Games. Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk and Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung were among those attending.
Hong Kong bagged 53 medals in Hangzhou, its best showing at an Asian Games.
