Edgar Cheung sealed a comfortable victory in the men's foil fencing event on Sunday.
He beat China's Chen Haiwei 15-2 in the final, winning Hong Kong's second gold medal on the opening day of the Asian Games.
Cheung told HOY TV that the experience was surreal.
"I don't know how to describe the feeling. I was very relaxed, but I obviously wanted to win when I stepped on stage. When I finished, I felt fine again so I had very contradictory feelings. I think this is just something an athlete must get used to," he said.
"Sometimes you might not be in the best spot mentally, but you have to adjust the minute you step on stage."
He added that he hopes to medal again in the upcoming men's team event.
The SAR delegation's leader Kenneth Fok applauded Cheung for his performance, and said that the fencer always competes at a high level. He also congratulated the athlete for adding another gold medal to Hong Kong's tally.
Meanwhile, Cheung's teammate Ryan Choi earned the bronze medal alongside Japan's Takahiro Shikine after losing 15-9 to Chen in the semi-finals.
Choi told HOY TV he was disappointed, and that this was the match he felt under the most pressure.
"There were very few opponents, and at least eight of them are extremely strong so it did take a lot of effort to fight through. This gave me a lot of pressure. I have been putting a lot of expectations upon myself these past few days in training," he said.
"I need to be more forgiving of myself after today's tournament because I did earn a medal at the end. Hopefully, our team event or next year's tournament will make up for today's regret."
The two athletes alongside teammates Nicholas Choi and Yeung Chi-ka will now head into the men's foil team event on Wednesday.
