The first batch of tickets for National Games events to be held in Hong Kong are now on sale.

Thursday's initial release of tickets covers beach volleyball, men's handball, men's U22 basketball and rugby sevens.

Tickets are also available for 13 of the Games' events that will be held in Guangdong.

"This is the first time Hong Kong is co-hosting the National Games with Guangdong and Macau, giving everyone a chance to witness this national-level event in person and support the athletes. It is a rare opportunity," Chief Executive John Lee said in a social media post.

Buyers using the National Games ticketing website will have to provide their names during the registration process. The tickets are also on sale at 11 outlets operated by China Travel Service (Hong Kong).

Organisers said Hong Kong residents will need to use their ID card to buy tickets for events in the SAR, and their mainland travel permit for events in Guangdong.

In general, only six tickets can be purchased for each event session, although this is reduced to three for events expected to be especially popular.

Tickets for the remaining four events in Hong Kong – track cycling, golf, triathlon and fencing – are expected to be made available in phases from late September.

Some people went to the China Travel Service outlet in Wan Chai to buy tickets early in the morning.

"The events I bought tickets for are beach volleyball and men's handball. Since I play volleyball myself, I wanted to see what beach volleyball is like," a man surnamed Poon told RTHK.

"I came from the Western District of Hong Kong Island around 9am today to buy tickets on-site. I wanted to get a physical ticket as a souvenir, after all, it’s my first time attending a National Games event."

Poon also said he plans to go to host cities like Guangzhou or Macau to watch beach volleyball and men's handball events.

A man surnamed Li said he was at the outlet to buy a ticket in person because the website only accepts payments in renminbi.
