Hong Kong boccia athlete Leung Yuk-wing has secured the city’s first gold medal in the sport at this year’s National Games for Persons with Disabilities.

Leung beat Guangdong’s Guang Yuexiang with a commanding 7-1 victory in the men’s individual BC4 gold medal match at Kai Tak Arena on Friday.

Competing on home ground, Leung set the pace in the first round, taking a strong four-point lead.

Although Guang managed to pull one point back in the second, Leung sealed his win by adding three more points across the final two rounds, handily claiming the top spot on the podium.

After the match, Leung said he was very happy to be able to win the first boccia gold in the Games on home soil.

"This is my first time competing at the National Games for Persons with Disabilities," he said.

"It has always been a goal of mine to win a gold medal from every large-scale sporting competition event.

"I have already completed half my goal. I will continue to work hard in the men's doubles event next. I am feeling a lot of joy right now."

Earlier in the day, Leung’s teammate Tang Zhijiang secured bronze after a tight 3-2 win over Guangdong’s Zheng Yuansen to complete the podium in this category.

With these results, Hong Kong’s boccia team now holds one gold and three bronze medals in these Games.
