Hong Kong para fencer Alison Yu captured a silver medal in the women’s individual epee Class A event at the National Games for Persons with Disabilities on Thursday that came down to the final moments in a tense gold medal bout.
Yu faced Shanghai’s Gu Haiyan at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre, narrowly falling 3-4 in a match defined by its dramatic swings.
The opening round ended scoreless, before Gu found her rhythm to take a point in the second.
Fighting back in the final round, Yu surged ahead to lead 3-2.
Gu responded instantly, levelling the score before seizing a decisive point to edge ahead 4-3.
She then held her nerve through the remaining time to clinch the gold.
Yu had earlier secured her place in the final with a 15-10 victory over another Shanghai athlete, Zou Xufeng, in the semifinals.
Zou won the bronze medal match to join her teammate on the podium.
