The torch relay in Hong Kong for this year's National Games will be a two-hour journey showcasing the city's unique culture and sports, according to organisers.

Yeung Tak-keung, Head of the National Games Coordination Office in the SAR, on Monday said the route would begin at the Central Government Offices and proceed to the Kai Tak Sports Park, one of the main venues for the Games.

Spanning 10 kilometres, the route will pass by Victoria Harbour and other landmarks, such as Tamar Park, Golden Bauhinia Square, the Reunification Monument, the Cultural Centre, and the Museum of Arts.

He added the relay would not only be on foot, but also on ferries and open-top buses.

“We try to show the best side of HK, including our cultural, sports, tourism attractions and sports landmarks,” Yeung said.

“We hope the torch relay can arouse the public’s interest in the National Games, and also show the best side of HK to our mainland and overseas friends and audiences,” he added.

A total of 50 runners will participate in the relay, with half of them being athletes, and 30 percent of them from sponsoring bodies.

The remaining runners will comprise volunteers, youth representatives, the disabled, and ethnic minorities, which Yeung said demonstrates Hong Kong's openness, diversity, and inclusiveness.

Subsequent transport measures will be in place to make way for the relay on Sunday, including temporary road diversions and closures.

From 8am onwards, roads along Wan Chai North and Kai Tak Sports Park will be temporarily closed, while roads near the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront will be shut from 8.30am.

Temporary restricted flying zones will also be set up from 8.30am to 11.30am along the relay route on the day.

“The torch relay will be held on a Sunday morning from 9.30am, and will take about two hours. Normally on Sunday mornings, the traffic is less busy, so we choose this time, [because] we think that would minimise disruption to our economic and other activities,” Yeung said.

Viewing areas will also be put up along the route for the public to witness the event and cheer the torch bearers.

The torch relay will be held on November 2 simultaneously with Guangzhou, Macau, and Shenzhen, a week ahead of the National Games opening on November 9.
