The National Games torch relay in Hong Kong was successfully held on Sunday.

The event was held concurrently with relays in Guangzhou, Macau, and Shenzhen on Sunday, one week before the National Games Opening Ceremony on November 9.

Sports minister Rosanna Law ignited the flame at Tamar Park at around 9.30am, after which Acting Chief Executive Eric Chan passed the torch to the first runner — table tennis player Wong Chun-ting.

The 10-kilometre route, featuring 50 torchbearers, then followed the scenic Wan Chai promenade, reaching the Monument in Commemoration of the Return of Hong Kong to China and Golden Bauhinia Square.

The relay then crossed Victoria Harbour by ferry and continued along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront.

It culminated with the final torchbearer, fencer Kaylin Hsieh, lighting the cauldron at Kai Tak Sports Park.

Hsieh described being a torchbearer as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience" and hopes her role will inspire others to pursue their dreams.

"It means a lot to me because this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will remember for the rest of my life," she said.

"Fire symbolises hope and the fighting spirit and passion that you have of a sport or chasing a dream or passion. I really hope all the athletes and just people watching sports or people who love sports could enjoy this process and chase that dream, chase that goal."

The fencer, who recently clinched a gold medal at the World University Games, will compete in the women’s individual and team epee events at the National Games.

As the fencing events will also take place at Kai Tak Sports Park, Hsieh said she hopes to carry the power of the flame to "shine" in the competition.

For his part, Wong said he felt delighted and thrilled chosen as the first runner and hopes that he had kicked off the relay "on a high note."

The flame was subsequently transferred into a special safety lantern.

Chan noted it would be brought to Guangzhou to be merged with the flames from the other three cities, ultimately lighting the main torch at the opening ceremony.
