The Hong Kong men’s rugby sevens team secured a spot in the National Games final on Thursday, guaranteeing them at least a silver medal after a commanding semifinal performance against Jiangsu.

Hong Kong laid the foundation for victory in the first half at Kai Tak Stadium.

A revamped lineup, featuring starter Liam Herbert, paid immediate dividends.

Herbert, alongside Harry Sayers and Fong Kit-fung, each crossed for a try, while Bryn Phillips was flawless with the boot, adding three conversions.

Despite a late try from Jiangsu just before halftime, the SAR team entered the break with a commanding 21-5 lead.

The second half saw more of the same dominance with Max Denmark making a spectacular impact, scoring two consecutive tries to extend Hong Kong's lead.

Although Jiangsu intensified their attacks late in the match to add seven points, Hong Kong ultimately sealed the match with a 33-19 victory.

This semifinal win continues Hong Kong's undefeated run at the tournament.

Earlier, they topped their group, which included a 43-5 win over Inner Mongolia and triumphs over Shandong and Tianjin on the opening day.

They will now face Shandong again in the gold medal match on Friday at 9pm.

On the women’s side, Hong Kong will play in the fifth-place playoff after a strong 36-7 victory over Hebei in Thursday's placement match.

They had a rough start as Hebei scored an early try and conversion.

Hong Kong, however, swiftly mounted a comeback, turning the game around to lead 19-7 by halftime.

They showed no mercy after the break, with Melody Li scoring a try and Julia Oyana crossing for a double.

A conversion from Jessica Ho contributed to a 17-point second-half haul, cementing a decisive 29-point victory.

This win follows the team's first group-stage victory, where they mounted a second-half comeback to defeat Shanghai 27-14.

Their group campaign concluded with one win and two losses, having previously been defeated by Shandong and Sichuan.

The women's team will have a rematch against Shanghai for fifth place on Friday at 6.30pm.
